Center Pivot Irrigation Equipment
Irrigation applications are great candidates for powering with a phase converter. In the case of a center pivot system, sizing the converter requires some special considerations. The following table gives Phase converter sizes for pivot systems with no booster pumps or end guns.
Sizing Table for Center Pivot Systems With No Auxiliary Motors
HP rating of Tower Motors |
# of Towers | Phase converter Required |
---|---|---|
.75 | 3-4 | R3/10-460-HD |
– | 5-6 | R5/15-460-HD |
– | 7-10 | R7.5/20-460-HD |
1 | 3 | R3/10-460-HD |
– | 4-5 | R5/15-460-HD |
– | 6-7 | R7.5/20-460-HD |
– | 8-10 | R10/30-460-HD |
For pivot systems with booster pumps and end guns, simply add up the hp of all towers, end guns, and booster pumps. This gives you the total running hp, which is the second number in the rotary model #. To determine the starting rating of the converter (the first number in the rotary model #), use 60% of the total hp of the tower motors or the hp rating of the largest pump, whichever is greater. If the pivot will ever run dry or will run without the booster pump running, then you must add the terminal block option (/TB1 or /TB2). This allows the phase converter to run in a light-loaded condition without causing an over voltage situation. Please contact the factory for further assistance.

Submersible Pumps
Submersible pumps are designed to run overloaded; therefore, they require more power than a typical motor at the same horsepower rating. Because of this, Steelman recommends choosing a heavy-duty phase converter and only running one submersible pump per phase converter for pumps over 10hp. For more information contact Steelman Industries.
Elevators/Float Switch Applications/Unattended Applications
For applications that run intermittently and are unattended, special consideration needs to be taken so that the phase converter does not run continuously unloaded. Steelman offers an automatic (/A) option for these applications. This option consists of a switch and timer system that will start the phase converter first, allowing it to get up to speed, and then start the load motor. After the load motor shuts off, the phase converter will run a predetermined amount of time to allow for quick restart of the load motor, and then shut off.
